dc.descriptionThis article analyzes the urban extension of the first places, circuits, and electric lighting in Santiago at the turn of the century. This insertion from the municipality was based on visions about electrification, which associated this energy with progress, efficiency, and technical rationality, preceded by a historical context where kerosene and gas lighting were considered deficient, linked to a colonial past. It is proposed, based on the methodological review of municipal and legislative sources and the newspaper El Ferrocarril, that these visions materialized in a double centrality, spatial and political. First, based on the strategic location of the first circuits and lighting, privileging the center over peripheral sectors, which will be illustrated through a series of plans. Second, related on a strong centralism from the municipality, based on the possible economic and industrial benefits that Santiago could develop using such energy. Finally, from the history of technology and urban history, this article highlights the importance of studying the first insertions of electricity in Santiago, complexifying its urban and political specificities, as well as its consequences for electricity regulations during the first part of the twentieth century in Chile.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo analiza la extensión urbana de los primeros lugares, circuitos y alumbrados eléctricos en Santiago en el cambio de siglo. Esta inserción se basó en visiones sobre la electrificación emanadas desde el municipio, las cuales asociaron esta energía con el progreso, la eficacia y la racionalidad técnica, antecedidas de un contexto histórico donde los alumbrados a parafina y de gas fueron considerados atrasados y deficientes, enlazados a un pasado colonial. Se propone, sobre la revisión metodológica de fuentes municipales, legislativas y el diario El Ferrocarril, que dichas visiones se materializaron en una doble centralidad, tanto espacial como política. La primera, fundada en la ubicación estratégica de los primeros circuitos y alumbrados, privilegiando el centro por sobre sectores periféricos, las cuales se ilustrarán a través de una serie de planos. La segunda, basada en un fuerte centralismo desde el municipio, fundado en los posibles beneficios económicos e industriales que podría llegar a desarrollar Santiago utilizando dicha energía. Finalmente, y desde la historia de la tecnología y la historia urbana, este artículo releva la importancia de estudiar las primeras inserciones de la electricidad en Santiago, complejizando sus especificidades urbanas y políticas, así como sus consecuencias para las regulaciones eléctricas durante la primera parte del siglo XX en Chile.es-ES
