The article analyzes the right to social security of independent performing artists in Ecuador through the analysis of the accessibility of the voluntary insurance of the Ecuadorian Institute of Social Security (IESS). Qualitative information has been used, i.e., national (Constitution, Social Security Law) and international regulations (ILO Conventions and recommendations regarding labor and social security), as well as socio-historical information and studies on social security, and interviews with independent performing artists. The article comprises an introduction that presents the situation of access to social security for independent performing artists by means of national figures. Subsequently, the socio-historical context of social security as a result of a series of social demands from workers' organizations is presented, followed by a regulatory context that establishes the conditions and requirements to be able to enjoy the benefits of voluntary insurance. The analysis of accessibility is based on two criteria: the cost of social security and that such cost does not jeopardize other rights. Finally, some conclusions are drawn.El artículo analiza el ejercicio del derecho a la seguridad social de artistas escénicos independientes de Ecuador a través del análisis de accesibilidad del seguro voluntario del Instituto Ecuatoriano de Seguridad Social (IESS). Se ha utilizado información cualitativa, es decir, normativa nacional (Constitución, Ley de Seguridad Social) e internacional (Convenios y recomendaciones de la OIT respecto al trabajo y seguridad social), además de información sociohistórica y estudios sobre seguridad social, así como entrevistas a artistas escénicos independientes. El artículo consta de una introducción que expone la situación del acceso a seguridad social de artistas escénicos independientes mediante cifras nacionales. Posteriormente se expone el contexto sociohistórico de la seguridad social como resultado de una serie de demandas sociales desde organizaciones de trabajadores, seguido de un contexto normativo que establece las condiciones y requisitos para poder disfrutar de los beneficios del seguro voluntario. El análisis de accesibilidad se realiza con base a dos criterios: el costo de seguridad social y que ese costo no ponga en riesgo otros derechos. Finalmente se establecen algunas conclusiones.
