It has been suggested that, before the arrival of the Europeans, there was an abundant population of southern elephant seals (Mirounga leonina Linnaeus, 1758) on Robinson Crusoe Island and that their extirpation would have occurred in a very short time due to intensive and indiscriminate hunting. However, the data that support this hypothesis are very scarce and inconsistent. In this paper we examine the historical and archaeological information available to reject, in a preliminary way, both postulates and we indicate the need for new lines of research to increase the corpus of data on the supposed "extirpation" of a southern elephant seal’s population on Robinson Crusoe Island, if it really existed.Se ha planteado que antes de la llegada de los europeos había una población abundante de elefantes marinos del sur (Mirounga leonina Linnaeus, 1758) en la isla Robinson Crusoe, y que su extirpación habría ocurrido en un plazo muy breve debido a su caza intensiva e indiscriminada. Sin embargo, los datos que sustentan estos planteamientos son muy escasos y poco consistentes. En este trabajo examinamos la información histórica y arqueológica disponible para rechazar, en forma preliminar, ambos postulados e indicamos la necesidad de nuevas líneas de investigación para aumentar el corpus de datos sobre la supuesta “extirpación”, si es que realmente existió, de una población de elefantes marinos del sur en la isla Robinson Crusoe.
