dc.descriptionThe article analyzes the various explanations proposed regarding the 8th-century document known as the "Donation of Constantine." Through a comprehensive review of contemporary literature, it aims to systematize the existing historiographical discussion, particularly focusing on two points concerning this document: the issue of its origin (Roman or Frankish) and the role it played in strengthening the power of the Papacy. It is concluded that while the Holy See did not extensively use the "Donation" in its political claims or discourse on primacy, as doubts about its authenticity always existed, the document had a strong implicit significance. It emphasized the universal nature of the Church (as the Roman Empire had been) and highlighted its role in preserving culture during the Middle Ages.en-US
dc.descriptionEl artículo analiza las diversas explicaciones que se han propuesto a propósito del documento del siglo VIII denominado “Donación de Constantino”. Así, a través de una revisión exhaustiva de la bibliografía contemporánea, se busca sistematizar la discusión historiográfica existente, especialmente sobre dos puntos relativos a este documento: el problema del origen (origen romano u origen franco) y el rol que jugó en el afianzamiento del poder del Papado. Se concluye que, si bien la Santa Sede no usó mayormente la “Donación” en sus reivindicaciones políticas ni en su discurso sobre la primacía, puesto que siempre hubo dudas de su autenticidad, el documento tuvo un fuerte significado implícito para enfatizar el carácter universal de la Iglesia (como lo había sido el Imperio Romano) y destacar su papel en la conservación de la cultura durante la Edad Media.es-ES
