HERITAGE IN DISPUTE, BEYOND VANDALISM: URBAN FALLISM, RESIGNIFICATION AND THE APPROPRIATION OF PUBLIC MONUMENTS IN THE CHILEAN CITIES AFTER THE SOCIAL OUTBREAK

dc.descriptionThis article examine the phenomenon of vandalization, resignification and appropiation of public monuments after the social outbreak of October 2019 in different chilean cities. Following the global and local discussions based upon the review of the urban fallism concept, we propose a caracterization of the current heritage debate in Chile that situates the public monument as a central axis of the new heritage's disputes, which are shifted from the acknowledgement of neighbourhood and comunities asagents of territories, and towards a visibilization of public monuments with new claimed contents.From an interpretive and cultural approach, based on a methodology that articulates press reviews, photographic and documentary material of the vandalization actions, we analyze the processes of re-signification and appropriation of public monuments, which have been highly covered in the media, throughout seven cities in the north, center and south of Chile, between October 2019 and October 2020.The resulting analysis of these cases allows us to contend that the dynamic of the demolition of monuments in Chile raises awareness on a particular form of urban fallism based in the constatation of the established symbolism of the official heritage by historically marginalized groups in the hegemonic narration of national identity such as: aboriginal population, organized women, which rise up demands against inequality, respect of cultural diversity, and a new relationship with the environment.The paper concludes that the current logic of resignification and anti-hegemonic appropriation of public monuments is comprised by a simultaneous process of constatation, desacralization, and a new meaning of the official heritage and its manifestation on urban space. Finally, we suggest the need to discuss the representation role of public monuments in order to enable new narratives of the past within the public space.en-US
dc.descriptionEl presente artículo examina el fenómeno de vandalización, resignificación y apropiación de monumentos públicos acontecido tras el contexto del estallido social de octubre de 2019 y su expresión en las ciudades chilenas. Recogiendo las discusiones, globales y locales, basadas en la revisión del concepto de urban fallism, se propone una caracterización de la actual dinámica del debate patrimonial en Chile que sitúa al monumento público como eje central de las nuevas disputas por el patrimonio, las que se desplazan desde el reconocimiento de barrios y de comunidades como agentes clave en los territorios, hacia una visibilización de los monumentos públicos con nuevos contenidos de reivindicación.A partir de un enfoque interpretativo-cultural, basado en una metodología de revisión de catastros oficiales, prensa, material fotográfico y documental de las acciones de vandalización, se analizan los procesos de resignificación y de apropiación de monumentos públicos con alta cobertura mediática, acontecidos en siete ciudades del norte, centro y sur del país, entre octubre de 2019 y octubre de 2020.El resultado del análisis de casos permite sostener que la dinámica de derribo de monumentos en Chile visibiliza una forma particular de urbanfallismo, basada en la impugnación de los símbolos establecidos como parte del patrimonio oficial desde grupos históricamente invisibilizados del relato hegemónico de la identidad nacional, tal como los pueblos originarios o las mujeres organizadas, quienes levantan demandas vinculadas con la lucha contra la desigualdad, el respeto a la diversidad cultural y una nueva relación con el medioambiente.Se concluye que las actuales lógicas de resignificación y de apropiación contrahegemónica del monumento público involucran procesos simultáneos de impugnación, desacralización y resignificación del patrimonio oficial y de su manifestación en el espacio urbano. Finalmente, se sugiere la necesidad de discutir el rol de representación que plantean los monumentos públicos, con el fin de avanzar hacia nuevas narrativas del pasado en el espacio público.es-ES
