| dc.description | This chapter examines the resurgence of the anti-vaccine movement in Mexico amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the social distancing measures began, activist groups questioned official announcements and protested against containment measures, spreading misinformation on social media platforms. During the pandemic, these protests received criticism for being rooted in half-truths and emotional arguments. Despite limitations imposed by social distancing measures, the movement adapted to digital activism. In order to study this protest movement, the paper adopts a theoretical perspective based on Niklas Luhmann's Social Systems Theory, treating the anti-vaccine movement as a social system. Employing digital ethnography, the study focused on major activist groups on social media platforms, identifying their codes, identities, symbols, and languages. The article provides relevant empirical information on the anti-vaccine movement in Mexico while contributing to the field of Social Systems Theory studies on protest movements. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este capítulo examina el resurgimiento del movimiento antivacunas en México en el contexto de la pandemia de COVID-19. Casi desde el inicio de las medidas de distanciamiento social, grupos y colectivos de activistas cuestionaron los anuncios oficiales y protestaron contra las medidas de confinamiento, difundiendo información errónea en las plataformas de redes sociales. Pronto, estas protestas recibieron críticas por estar arraigadas en verdades a medias y argumentos emotivos. Sin embargo, a pesar de las limitaciones impuestas por las medidas de distanciamiento social, el movimiento antivacunas logró adaptarse al activismo digital y sobrevivir durante todo el periodo pandémico. Para estudiar al movimiento, el artículo adopta la perspectiva teórica de la Teoría de los Sistemas Sociales de Niklas Luhmann, con el fin de observar al movimiento antivacunas como un sistema social que cuenta con sus propios procesos de diferenciación internos. Empleando etnografía digital, el estudio se centró en los principales grupos activistas en las plataformas de redes sociales, identificando sus códigos, identidades, símbolos y lenguajes. El artículo brinda información empírica relevante sobre el movimiento antivacunas en México al mismo tiempo que contribuye al campo de estudios de la Teoría de Sistemas Sociales sobre los movimientos de protesta. | es-ES |
