dc.descriptionThis article studies Richard Rodriguez’ autobiography Hunger of Memory, in which the author builds his personal and literary identity through considerations on his two languages: Spanish, his mother tongue, and English, the language of his education. Rodriguez suggests that only English has allowed him to construe a public identity. This linguistic choice, argues Rodriguez, affects other aspects like his religiosity or social class, as well. Three aspects are analyzed in this article: the traits of autobiography as a literary genre, the idea of identity as opposed to ethnicity, in Rodriguez’ view; and the role of language(s).en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo estudia la autobiografía Hunger of Memory, del chicano Richard Rodríguez, donde el autor va construyendo su identidad personal y literaria a partir de consideraciones sobre sus dos lenguas: la materna, el español; y la de su educación, el inglés. Rodríguez plantea que solo uno de esos idiomas, el inglés, es el que le ha permitido construirse su propia identidad en el espacio público. Esta elección lingüística tiene consecuencias en otros ámbitos de la persona, como la religiosidad y la clase social, según el planteo de Rodríguez. Se analizan tres aspectos: el género del texto, la cuestión de la identidad, que Rodríguez opone a la etnicidad, y el rol asignado a la(s) lengua(s).es-ES
