dc.descriptionThe objective of this article is to analyze the port status of Talcahuano during the transition of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, when it went from being an entrepôt to a commercial port of the South Pacific. To achieve this purpose, demographic transformations as well as the commercial societies that operated in Talcahuano  between the 1870s and 1910s are described. Both elements conditioned the economic modernization of this space, laying the foundations for the creation of the social fabric of Talcahuano, whose socio-cultural features developed at the eaves of its economic forms, linked to trade, manufacturing and services. The research was carried out with sources from the Trade Fund of the National Historical Archive of Santiago de Chile and data from national population censuses carried out between 1875 and 1907.en-US
dc.descriptionEl objetivo del presente artículo es analizar la condición portuaria de Talcahuano durante la transición de los siglos XIX y XX, momento donde pasó de ser un entrepôt a un puerto comercial del Pacífico Sur. Para lograr dicho propósito se realizó una descripción de las transformaciones demográficas, así como también de las sociedades comerciales constituidas entre las décadas de 1870 y 1910. Ambos elementos condicionaron la modernización económica de dicho espacio, sentando las bases para la complejización del tejido social porteño, cuyos rasgos socioculturales se desarrollaron al alero de sus formas económicas, vinculadas al comercio, las manufacturas y los servicios. La investigación se llevó a cabo con fuentes del Fondo de Comercio del Archivo Nacional Histórico (ANH) de Santiago de Chile y los censos de población que se realizaron en el país entre 1875 y 1907.es-ES
