The following paper explores the value of friendship on Augustine of Hippo’s thought. In the first place, fundamental characteristics of the right love o neighbor will be identified making use of the conceptual richness deployed by the Hipponense to refer to love (caritas, frui, diligere, agape, ordo, pondus). Then, an approximation to the Augustinian vision of friendship, understood as a privileged way of loving neighbour, will be suggested. Thirdly, differences and similarities between the Augustinian thought and the Greco-Roman tradition will be identified, making special focus on the philosophy of Cicero. Finally, the value of friendship and its relation with happiness, which is no other thing than the communal joy of God, will be exposed.El siguiente artículo se propone investigar el valor de la amistad en el pensamiento de Agustín de Hipona. Para ello, en primer lugar, se identificarán las características fundamentales del recto amor al prójimo haciendo uso del rico bagaje conceptual utilizado por el Hiponense para referirse al amor (caritas, frui, diligere, agape, ordo, podus). Luego, se brindará una aproximación a la visión agustiniana de la amistad, forma privilegiada de amor al prójimo. En tercer lugar, se identificarán las similitudes y diferencias del pensamiento agustiniano con la tradición grecolatina, haciendo especial énfasis en la filosofía de Cicerón. Finalmente se expondrá el valor de la amistad y su relación con la felicidad, la cual no es otra cosa que el gozo comunitario de Dios.
