It is quite well known that the Stagirite raises the need for friendship in a profoundly human context that is concerned with happiness, with the virtuous life, and with its real possibility within the pólis. In the same way, Cicero would insist on the mentioned necessity, underlining that virtue also contains and unfolds friendship, as it embraces friends under an intellectual agreement on the ultimate realities. However, this approach was prudently received by Augustine of Hippo, who, based on the wisdom of Scripture, reflected on friendship in a new and original way. In this sense, is Aristotelian optimism permissible for its establishment as the basis of the virtuous life?; and is Cicero right to base friendship on consensio about divine and human things? Reflecting on Augustine's answers to these questions, presenting his original vision of friendship, is the main intention of this paper.Es bastante sabido que el Estagirita plantea la necesidad de la amistad en un contexto profundamente humano que está preocupado por la felicidad, por la vida virtuosa, y por su posibilidad real dentro de la pólis. En la misma línea, Cicerón insistiría en la mentada necesidad subrayando que la virtud contiene y despliega además a la amistad, al cobijar a los amigos bajo un acuerdo intelectual sobre las realidades últimas. Ahora bien, este planteo fue recibido con prudencia por Agustín de Hipona, quien apoyado en la sabiduría de la Escritura ha reflexionado sobre la amistad de un modo nuevo y original. En ese sentido, ¿es lícito el optimismo aristotélico para su establecimiento como base de la vida virtuosa? ¿Tiene razón Cicerón al fundamentar la amistad en el consensio sobre las cosas divinas y humanas? Reflexionar sobre las respuestas agustinas a estas preguntas, presentando su original visión sobre la amistad, constituye la intención principal del presente trabajo.
