This article uses the interpretative possibilities of the judicial files to reconstruct the criminal trajectory of the thief Roberto Echeverría, also known as El Chute. Based on his criminal career, it is proposed to analyze the process of specialization in the practice of robbery of some Chilean urban thieves during the last years of the 19th century and the first decades of the 20th. For this, analogies between theft, and the notions of craft and professionalization could be a useful methodological approach, highlighting various aspects of this specialization, such as learning relationships and complicity with other criminals, the sophistication of the techniques to steal, and the deployment of a judicial culture to avoid arrests and trials.Este artículo aprovecha las posibilidades interpretativas de los expedientes judiciales para reconstruir la trayectoria delictiva del ladrón Roberto Echeverría, alias “El Chute”. A partir de su carrera criminal, propone analizar el proceso de especialización en la práctica del robo de algunos ladrones urbanos chilenos durante los últimos años del siglo XIX y primeras décadas del XX. Para ello se recurre a las analogías entre el robo y las nociones de oficio y profesionalización, destacando diversos aspectos de esta especialización, tales como las relaciones de aprendizaje y complicidad con otros delincuentes, la sofisticación de las técnicas para robar y el despliegue de una cultura judicial para sortear las detenciones y juicios.
