Chile and Costa Rica were two of the Latin American countries that configured their health systems earlier at the beginning of the 20th century. The current demographic and epidemiological indicators that both countries have been the result of a long process of organized social responses carried out by multiple actors, generating simultaneous and differentiated institutional construction processes. In order to carry out a historical approximation of this process, the objective of this article is to compare the initial configuration of the health systems of Chile and Costa Rica during the first half of the 20th century. For this, it is proposed to use as categories of analysis the organizational and institutional responses from charity, hygiene, philanthropy and the social issue.Chile y Costa Rica fueron dos de los países latinoamericanos que más tempranamente configuraron sus sistemas de salud a inicios del siglo XX. Los indicadores demográficos y epidemiológicos actuales que poseen ambos países son el resultado de un largo proceso de respuestas sociales organizadas llevadas a cabo por múltiples actores, generando procesos de construcción institucional simultáneos y diferenciados. Con el propósito de llevar a cabo una aproximación histórica a dicho proceso, el objetivo del presente artículo es comparar la configuración inicial de los sistemas de salud de Chile y Costa Rica durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. Para ello, se propone utilizar como categorías de análisis las respuestas organizativas e institucionales provenientes de la beneficencia, el higienismo, la filantropía y la cuestión social.
