This article, through a historical journey, aims to expose some fundamental references regarding the perspectives and social theories that have addressed the understanding of the body. In the course of the story, the epistemological ruptures regarding the interpretation and representation of the body become evident. A transition from the body understood as a body-object; a corporeal materiality, passing through contemporary proposals that situate the body as a body-subject; a body traversed by experience, to the context of hypermodernity, where bodies develop in a new virtual space. Different social disciplines have theorized the body through the question "what is the body", this article presents some tensions that have derived from it.  El presente artículo, a través de un recorrido histórico, pretende exponer algunos referentes fundamentales respecto a las perspectivas y teorías sociales que han abordado la comprensión del cuerpo. En el trayecto del relato se evidencian los quiebres epistemológicos respecto a la representación e interpretación del cuerpo. Un tránsito desde el cuerpo entendido como cuerpo-objeto (una materialidad corpórea), pasando por las propuestas contemporáneas que sitúan al cuerpo como un cuerpo- sujeto (un cuerpo atravesado por la experiencia), hasta el contexto de hipermodernidad, donde los cuerpos se desenvuelven en un nuevo espacio virtual. Distintas disciplinas sociales han teorizado el cuerpo a través de la pregunta “¿qué es el cuerpo?”, en este artículo se presentan algunas tensiones que han derivado de esta interrogante.
