dc.descriptionThe satirical press was a cultural artefact of great popularity in the 19th century that was characterised by the regular inclusion of critical and festive caricatures in its ages. In Rio de Janeiro, in particular, it was an important medium that put into circulation a multiplicity of images and visual constructions about the War against Paraguay at the time it was in progress (1864-1870). Considering this genre of periodicals, the main objective of this article is to analyse the way in which the figure of Paraguayan President Francisco Solano López was visually configured during the war. We start from the hypothesis that, discursively, the war was not being waged against the Paraguayan people, but against their ruler. As a result, his figure became the favourite target of attack in the caricatures of the Brazilian press at the time and the inspiration for a multiplicity of significant and specific representations of the cultural imaginary of the time.en-US
dc.descriptionLa prensa satírica fue un artefacto cultural de gran popularidad en el siglo XIX que se caracterizó por incluir caricaturas críticas y festivas en sus páginas de forma regular. En Río de Janeiro, particularmente, fue un importante medio que puso en circulación una multiplicidad de imágenes y construcciones visuales sobre la guerra contra Paraguay en la época en que estaba en desarrollo (1864-1870). Considerando este género de publicaciones periódicas, este artículo analiza la forma en la que, visualmente, fue representada la figura del presidente paraguayo Francisco Solano López durante la coyuntura bélica. Se parte de la hipótesis de que la guerra, discursivamente, no se planteó contra el pueblo paraguayo, sino contra su gobernante. Esto hizo que su figura se convirtiera en el blanco de ataques de las caricaturas de la prensa brasileña en la época e inspiración de una multiplicidad de representaciones significativas y específicas del imaginario cultural de la época.es-ES
