dc.descriptionMusical practices in the public space contribute to shape social life and the materiality of space in itself. When, by force of habit, music is connected to festive events –or else, turns them into such things– it allows for certain urban spaces to become spaces of social encounter and participation, thus also shaping the affections of those who inhabit the city. Such encounters are never exempt of conflict, be it with the authorities that control the public spaces or among users of such spaces. Grounded in sound studies and their contribution to understanding the notion of “territory”, this text offers a series of considerations on how music in the public space, performed in the context of festive events, contributes to the social and material construction of space. Such sonic occupations allow territories to be contested and reconfigured as urban assets where social groups and their cultures can exist and reproduce. Since music can potentially modify power dynamics, music-making is place-making, and in the context of festivities in everyday life, it contributes to creating, reclaiming, or contesting preexisting territories.en-US
dc.descriptionLas prácticas musicales en los espacios públicos dan forma a la vida social y contribuyen a configurar la materialidad del espacio mismo. Cuando la música acompaña eventos festivos –o los convierte en algo tal–, consagra espacios urbanos que por fuerza del hábito se convierten en centros de convergencia, de encuentro y de participación social, contribuyendo a moldear los afectos de los habitantes de una urbe. Este tipo de convergencias no está nunca exenta de conflictos, sea con las autoridades que gestionan los espacios públicos o bien entre los usuarios. Recurriendo a los estudios sonoros y sus aportes en la comprensión del concepto de “territorio”, este texto ofrece algunas consideraciones generales acerca de los diversos modos en cómo la música en las calles y plazas de las ciudades, interpretada en el contexto de la fiesta popular, permite la construcción material y social del espacio. Es en tales ocupaciones sónicas cuando se dirime el tema central del territorio como un espacio en que ciertos grupos sociales y sus culturas pueden ser y reproducirse. Ya que lo sonoro permite la redistribución del poder inherente, la música que tiene lugar –y hace lugar– en ocasiones festivas en el marco de la vida cotidiana contribuye a crear, recuperar o contestar territorios preexistentes.es-ES
