Although the history of the Cuban independent cultural institutions was interrupted due to the social change of 1959, today new phenomena have been observed alongside with the slow process of economic changes in the second decade of this century. This work is a first approach to this sort of institutions for which a fieldword was conducted in Santiago de Cuba, the last capital of the Cuban eastern part. We aim to aproach to the interpretation of their real independence, their diferent objectives as well as the meaning built on them in relation to the urban space imaginaries. We start with a quantitative overview to get depth in the qualitative perspective. The work begins an exploration in a critical route that we hope will be followed by other researches, whose beginning and culmination rests on the distinction of belonging to a country with a unique model in the area.La historia de los centros culturales independientes en Cuba, interrupta con el cambio social de 1959, traza un nuevo relato con el proceso de apertura económica de la segunda década del siglo XXI. El presente trabajo pretende un primer acercamiento a las instituciones de esta naturaleza en el país, en especial en la ciudad Santiago de Cuba. Nuestro objetivo es comenzar una ruta por la interpretación de estos enclaves, su real autonomía, sus disímiles objetivos, así como sus significaciones e imaginarios construidos sobre ellos en relación a la construcción social del espacio urbano. Partimos de un esbozo cuantitativo para adentrarnos en la perspectiva cualitativa. El trabajo inicia una exploración en una ruta crítica que pretendemos se secunde por otras investigaciones, cuyo inicio y culminación descansa en la distinción de pertenecer a un país de modelo único en el área continental.
