The author mantains that Tom Dillehay and Américo Gordon’s 1979 article on the relationship between the asymmetrical modeled jugs, the ketrü duck (Tachyeres patachonicus) and the Mapuche married woman is at the basis of the turn that occurred in Chilean archeology at the beginning of the 1980s towards the systematic study of pre-Hispanic symbolism. The authors' argument is reviewed, it is related to the global theoretical context of the discipline at that time and its repercussions at the local level are briefly addressed.El autor sostiene que el artículo de Tom Dillehay y Américo Gordon de 1979 sobre la relación entre los jarros asimétricos modelados, el pato ketrü (Tachyeres patachonicus) y la mujer casada mapuche está en la base del giro que se produjo a comienzos de la década de 1980 en la arqueología chilena hacia el estudio sistemático del simbolismo prehispánico. Se sintetiza la argumentación de los autores, se relaciona con el contexto teórico global de la disciplina en aquella época y se abordan brevemente sus repercusiones a nivel local.
