dc.descriptionThis paper studies the construction of ideas and images concerning southern Chile’s landscapes proposed by scientific practices during the third quarter of the 19th century. Certain ideas about how the 19th century’s scientific practice used nature’s aesthetic appreciations in written and visual representations of space are discussed, based on the cases of hydrographer and naturalist Francisco Vidal Gormaz and painter and botanist Marianne North. Hence, it is suggested that southern Chile’s landscape is the result of a State-led territorial expansion and the material transformations that this implied, but also of an articulation of sensitive gazes over the territory –built from the scientific practice– in which Francisco Vidal Gormaz and Marianne North, among others, were engaged.en-US
dc.descriptionEn este artículo se estudia la construcción de las ideas e imágenes sobre el paisaje del sur de Chile propuestas por la práctica científica en el tercer cuarto del siglo XIX. A partir de los casos del hidrógrafo y naturalista Francisco Vidal Gormaz y de la pintora y botánica Marianne North, se discuten algunas ideas sobre la forma en que la práctica científica decimonónica empleó las apreciaciones estéticas de la naturaleza en las representaciones escritas y visuales sobre el espacio. De esta forma, se propone que el paisaje del sur de Chile es resultado de la expansión territorial ejecutada por el Estado y las transformaciones materiales que ello implicó, pero también de la articulación de miradas sensibles ante el territorio, construidas desde la práctica científica, en la que participaron entre otros Francisco Vidal Gormaz y Marianne North.es-ES
