The potential output plays an essential role in the design and evaluation of macroeconomic policy. Although the results obtained through the fiscal and monetary policy will depend on reliable potential output estimates, there is no consensus about the best methodology of estimation. In this work, the potential product is obtained by the structural method of the production function with two productive factors, capital and labor, combined in a Cobb-Douglas technology. The estimate is made using the VECM approach, and the potential output is applied to obtain the output gap in Argentina.El producto potencial juega un rol esencial en el diseño y evaluación de una política macroeconómica, y si bien los resultados obtenidos mediante el manejo de la política monetaria y fiscal dependen en gran medida de contar con estimaciones confiables de esta variable, no existe consenso sobre la metodología de estimación más apropiada. En este trabajo, el producto potencial se obtiene por el método estructural de la función de producción con dos factores productivos, capital y trabajo, combinados en una tecnología Cobb-Douglas. La estimación se realiza utilizando el enfoque VECM y el producto potencial se lo aplica al cálculo de la brecha del producto en Argentina.
