dc.descriptionThis article offers a new perspective on the study of railways: the one dictated by EnvironmentalHistory. For this study, our attention was focused on analysing the impacton the landscape, and the natural obstacles encountered by those who worked on theinstallation of the Talcahuano-Chillán branch line (1869-1874). We also identify theperceptions about new steam technologies. We postulate that, as this is the first branchbuilt in the Concepción area, its impact on the landscape was important, both from thevisual and from the physical transformation of the habitat itself. The natural difficultiesthat implied delays in the final delivery of the works are also verified, while others were the cause of accidents due to the terrain on which this branch line was built. Finally, weshow the perceptions that the inhabitants of the area, who ended up living next to thenew railway route, had on the matter. dc.descriptionEl presente artículo ofrece una nueva perspectiva sobre el estudio de los ferrocarriles: ladada por la Historia Ambiental. Para ello, nuestra atención se centró en analizar el impactoen el paisaje y los obstáculos naturales con los cuales se encontraron quienes trabajaronen la instalación del ramal Talcahuano-Chillán (1869-1874). Del mismo modo,rescatamos las percepciones que se tenían sobre las nuevas tecnologías a vapor. Postulamosque, al ser este el primer ramal construido en la zona de Concepción, su impactoen el paisaje fue importante, tanto desde lo visual como desde la transformación en elhábitat mismo; así también constatamos las dificultades naturales que se tradujeron enretrasos en la entrega definitiva de los trabajos, o que constituyeron causal de accidentesdebido al tipo de terreno en el cual se construyó este ramal. Por último, evidenciamos laspercepciones que los habitantes de la zona, que terminaron siendo vecinos de la nuevaruta férrea, tuvieron sobre el particular.
