In the first three decades of the twentieth century there was a growing public interest inthe living conditions of lower-class children in Chile. Official and mass media reportedon and applauded the setting-up of new institutions devoted to reforming those whocommitted crimes or used the streets as their space for working, getting about and socializing.Based on the analysis of representations of delinquent children published bythe press, the Boletín de la Policía de Santiago and the Sucesos magazine, this articlediscusses that the strategies to reform the lives of lower-class children, were to eliminatevagrancy and to adopt work ethics. In the context of the “cuestión social y política”,both goals conveyed the association of poverty with crime, which was a common viewamong the ruling classes.En las primeras tres décadas del siglo XX se produjo un interés creciente por las condicionesde vida de la infancia popular. Diversos medios oficiales y periodísticos informarony aplaudieron la creación de instituciones destinadas a la reforma de quienes cometíanalgún delito o hacían de la calle su espacio de trabajo, circulación y socialización.A partir del análisis de las representaciones sobre la infancia delincuente divulgadas porla prensa, el Boletín de la Policía de Santiago y la revista Sucesos, este artículo planteaque la serie de estrategias dirigidas a regenerar la niñez popular tuvieron como objetola erradicación de la vagancia y la adopción de una ética laboral. En el contexto de lacuestión social y política, ambos fines fueron expresivos de la asociación entre pobrezay delincuencia, visión extendida entre las clases dirigentes.
