In order to compete with other nations on the world stage, nineteen century Uruguay had to modify its political, economic and social structures. Deliberate associations between public authorities and the area of medicine were vital in establishing these structures and a new societal model. In the second half of the nineteenth century, childcare manuals were written for mothers and women’s roles in society began to be defined. We attempt to define the mother-wife-woman model health authorities sought to establish by analysing the medical discourse of a variety of childcare manuals from that time. Through this analysis, we establish that the triad of mother-wife-woman roles are impossible to define due to their intense interrelatedness, even acquiring the same meaning at times.Para equipararse con las naciones extranjeras y formar parte del panorama mundial, el Uruguay decimonónico tuvo que modificar sus estructuras políticas, económicas y sociales. En este último campo, la asociación entre los poderes públicos y la medicina fue una vital alianza para establecer un nuevo modelo de sociedad. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y a través de la redacción de manuales dedicados a las madres sobre el cuidado de los hijos, se comenzaron a delimitar los roles femeninos dentro de la sociedad. Tomando como punto de partida el análisis del discurso médico presente en los diferentes manuales de puericultura de la época, intentaremos establecer el modelo de mujer, madre y esposa que las autoridades sanitarias intentaron construir. Así, pretenderemos demostrar que la triada mujer-madre-esposa, constituyó un conjunto de roles imposibles de delimitar por separado debido a su estrecho vínculo adquiriendo por momentos un mismo significado.
