This paper analyzes the spread of the smallpox epidemic in New Granada between 1782 and 1785 through the viceroyalty’s trade routes, for which the records of parish burials of various urban centers were used. It was possible to establish that there were two routes for the spread of the epidemic: on the one hand, Cartagena’s was dispersed towards the interior of the New Granada through the Magdalena River between 1782 and 1783, and Maracaibo’s between 1783 and 1784. The two met in the village of Socorro. Finally, the intensity of the epidemic was calculated in the different populations studied using the multiplier factor.El artículo analiza la propagación de la epidemia de viruela por la Nueva Granada entre 1782 y 1785 a través de los circuitos comerciales del virreinato. Para ello se hizo uso de los registros parroquiales de entierros de diversos centros urbanos, a través de los cuales fue posible establecer que hubo dos rutas de contagio; por un lado, la procedente de Cartagena que se dispersó hacia el interior neogranadino a través de río Magdalena entre 1782 y 1783, y otra ruta procedente de Maracaibo entre 1783 y 1784, confluyendo ambas en la villa de Socorro. Por último, con la ayuda del factor multiplicador se calculó la intensidad del evento epidémico en las diferentes poblaciones estudiadas.
