sIn 1974, the Board of Governance formalized a new Political-Administrative Division (DPA). This reform aimed primarily to establish a new bureaucratic operation over the territorial borders of the Chilean state. Our working hypothesis suggests that the new DPA was a technical-political initiative with the purpose of governance. Anchored in hegemonic dispute, the DPA not only facilitated and increased internal communications among territorial authorities but also more efficiently controlled public operation, contrasting with the previously hyper-centralized state. Based on archival work focused on the National Commission of Administrative Reform (CONARA) and the press of the time, as well as the analysis of interviews with officials and authorities, we examine the origin and implementation of the DPA between 1974 and 1978. Additionally, we trace how the creation of regional bureaucratic devices generated various effects, interests, and conflicts within the regimeEn 1974, la Junta de gobierno oficializó una nueva división político administrativa (DPA). Esta reforma tuvo como principal objetivo instituir un nuevo funcionamiento burocrático sobre el conjunto de fronteras territoriales del Estado chileno. Nuestra hipótesis de trabajo propone que la nueva DPA fue una iniciativa de carácter técnico-política con el propósito de gobernar. Anclada en la disputa hegemónica, la DPA no solo permitió facilitar y aumentar las comunicaciones internas entre las autoridades territoriales sino también controlar de manera más eficiente la operación pública, a contrapelo del Estado hipercentralizado anterior. A partir de un trabajo de archivo centrado en la Comisión Nacional de Reforma Administrativa (CONARA) y la prensa de la época, así como el análisis de entrevistas a funcionarios y autoridades, se examina el origen y la implementación de la DPA entre 1974 y 1978, junto con rastrear cómo la creación de dispositivos burocráticos regionales generó diversos efectos, intereses y conflictos al interior del régimen.
