The summer of 1877 was characterised by an intense and passionate debate in the Chilean press about the scientific education of women, in connection with some decrees issued by the Minister of Justice, Worship and Public Instruction, Miguel Luis Amunátegui. This article argues that this debate, which pitted conservatives against liberals, reflects different conceptions of modernity, which in turn help to explain the existence of different visions of the common good, freedom and gender. Moreover, as part of a process of vindication of women's civil rights, it is argued that this debate expresses the need to combine constitutional history and gender history.El verano de 1877 se caracterizó por un intenso y apasionado debate en la prensa chilena acerca de la educación científica de las mujeres, a propósito de algunos decretos emitidos por el ministro de Justicia, Culto e Instrucción Pública, Miguel Luis Amunátegui. Este artículo argumenta que este debate, que enfrentó a conservadores y liberales, da cuenta de diferentes concepciones de modernidad, que a su vez ayudan a explicar la existencia de distintas visiones acerca del bien común, la libertad y el género. Además, por insertarse en un proceso de vindicación de derechos civiles de las mujeres, se plantea que dicho debate expresa la necesidad de combinar la historia constitucional y la historia de género.
