dc.descriptionThis article examines the distribution and sales of the communist newspaper El Siglo during the 1940s, in order to evaluate its reach and mass circulation, and concludes that it sold around thirty thousand copies a day; that 40-50% of the circulation was sold in Santiago; that the remaining 50-60% was concentrated in other localities of the central valley; and that distribution was strongly conditioned by the territorial extension and transport infrastructure of the country. Beyond the particularities of the case, these findings question the idea of a truly national press in the middle of the last century. Most of the information has been gathered from the newspaper copies themselves, complemented by other external sources.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo examina la distribución y venta del periódico comunista El Siglo durante la década de 1940, para evaluar su alcance y masividad y se concluye que este llegó a vender alrededor de treinta mil ejemplares diarios; que el 40-50 % de la tirada se vendía en Santiago; que el 50-60 % restante se concentraba en otras localidades del valle central; y que la distribución estuvo fuertemente condicionada por la extensión territorial y la infraestructura de transporte del país. Más allá de las particularidades del caso, estos hallazgos cuestionan la idea de una prensa realmente nacional a mediados del siglo pasado. La mayor parte de la información ha sido recabada de los mismos ejemplares del periódico, complementada con otras fuentes externas.es-ES
