This article compares the politics of memory and the past in Chile after the Pinochet dictatorship with Federal Germany after the II Word War. After a brief review of the most important measures taken by the governments in both countries to deal with the traumatic past, we underline some elements which were determining for the outcome and perception of the politics of memory and the past in both countries. Factors such as the years passing after the dictatorship, the international context, the conditions of the transitions processes and the public discourse seems be very important to have in mind before pronouncing a judgement about the politics of memory and the past.Se comparan las políticas del pasado y de memoria en Chile -después de la dictadura de Pinochet- y en Alemania Federal, tras la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Después de una breve reseña de las medidas más importantes a nivel oficial (de gobierno) en ambos países, se resaltan algunos elementos que determinaron el desarrollo y la percepción pública de las políticas del pasado y de memoria en ambos países. El objetivo es subrayar elementos tales como el tiempo transcurrido desde las dictaduras, el contexto internacional, las condiciones de las transiciones y el discurso público sobre la memoria para poder llegar a un juicio equilibrado sobre las políticas del pasado y de memoria.
