| dc.description | Decision-making in child protection is a complex task. In the Chilean welfare system, little is known about the protection decisions that impact boys and girls when their rights have been violated. Although there is international consensus that family-based alternative care is the most appropriate caregiving environment for young children without parental care, residential care is still widely used, and foster care has been promoted in the country but slowly. The objective of this study was to explore the variability and variables that impact the decision-making process in a suspected case of child maltreatment in Chile. The sample comprised child protection workers (n = 35) and undergraduate students (n = 177). Using a vignette approach, participants completed questionnaires about decision-making and their attitudes toward child protection systems. Personal and attitudinal variables seem to be impacting the decision-making process and evidence of disparity was found. Cluster analysis identified two groups according to their attitudes, one in favor of removal from home and the other against. In addition, the results indicated that there is variability in the decision to preserve or separate a child from her family and that personal characteristics, such as having children and gender, influence judgments and decisions. The results have implications for policy and practice in Chile when making decisions on child protection. | en-US |
| dc.description | La toma de decisiones en protección infantil es una tarea compleja. En Chile poco se sabe sobre las decisiones de protección que impactan a niños y niñas cuando sus derechos han sido vulnerados. En este sentido, aunque existe consenso internacional sobre que el cuidado alternativo familiar es el entorno más apropiado para niños y niñas sin el cuidado de sus padres, la institucionalización todavía se usa ampliamente. El acogimiento familiar se ha promovido, pero lentamente. El objetivo de este estudio fue explorar la variabilidad y variables que impactan la toma de decisiones frente a un caso de sospecha de maltrato infantil en Chile. La muestra estuvo compuesta por profesionales de protección infantil (n = 35) y estudiantes universitarios (n = 177) chilenos. Los participantes respondieron cuestionarios que incluían un caso de viñeta y preguntas sobre decisiones frente a una sospecha de abuso y actitudes hacia el sistema de protección infantil. Los resultados dan cuenta de que variables personales y actitudinales parecen impactar en el proceso de toma de decisiones y se encontró evidencia de disparidad. Los análisis de conglomerados identificaron dos grupos según sus actitudes, uno a favor de la remoción del hogar y otro en contra. Existe variabilidad en la decisión sobre la mantención de un niño/a dentro de su familia o su separación de ella, y ciertas características personales, como tener hijos y el género, inciden en los juicios y decisiones. Los resultados tienen implicancias para las políticas públicas y la práctica en materia de protección infantil en Chile. | es-ES |
