The article analyzes the Italian republican constitutional development, in order to highlights the importance of history in the analysis and understanding of the inevitable difficulties and delays in the implementation of the principles contained in the constitutional text. The proposed analysis aims to underline that the promulgation of a constitution is only the beginning of a long institutional and political process, whose most important and critical stage is the implementation of the principles sanctioned by the constituents. To achieve this goal, is presented a historical overview of the Italian constitutional development and outline some of the main characteristics of the text prepared by the Constituent Assembly from 1946 to 1948, to investigate into the difficulties and criticisms that the leadership of that time had to face when implementing the republican Constitution.El artículo analiza el desarrollo constitucional republicano italiano para subrayar la importancia de la historia para el análisis y comprensión de las inevitables dificultades y los retrasos en la implementación de los principios incluidos en el texto constitucional. El análisis propuesto pretende enfatizar que la promulgación de una constitución es solo el comienzo de un largo proceso institucional y político, cuya etapa más importante, y crítica, es la implementación de los principios sancionados por los constituyentes. Para cumplir se ofrece una panorámica histórica del desarrollo constitucional italiano y se delinean algunas de las características principales del texto elaborado por la Asamblea Constituyente desde 1946 a 1948, con el fin de profundizar en las dificultades y criticidades que la clase dirigente de entonces tuvo que enfrentar al momento de implementar la constitución republicana.
