dc.descriptionThis article aims to investigate the historical study of the landscape transformations caused by the introduction of the railroad in the Mapuche territory during the last decade of the nineteenth century. In accordance with the testimony of the Belgian engineer Gustave Verniory, one of the builders of the Araucanía railroad, the article proposes that the construction of the railroad in this region involved a transformation of the landscape in the double sense that this concept entails, that is, as a defined portion of the earth's surface and as a cultural representation that arouses the gaze on that space. This is addressed through the study of two areas that converge in the work of Gustave Verniory: the narrative of the landscape and the photographic representation linked to the recording of the construction of the railroad. Read in a historical key, these views of the landscapes of colonization anticipate what in the twentieth century would become the south of Chile.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo se propone indagar en el estudio histórico de las transformaciones del paisaje suscitadas por la introducción del ferrocarril en el territorio mapuche durante la última década del siglo XIX. A la luz de variados registros que se concatenan en torno al testimonio del ingeniero belga Gustave Verniory, uno de los constructores del ferrocarril de la Araucanía, el artículo propone que la construcción de la vía férrea en esta región supuso una transformación del paisaje en el doble sentido que este concepto conlleva, es decir, entendido como una porción delimitada de la superficie terrestre y como representación cultural que suscita la mirada sobre ese espacio. Esto se aborda a partir del estudio de dos ámbitos que confluyen en la obra de Gustave Verniory: la narrativa del paisaje y la representación fotográfica vinculada al registro de la construcción del ferrocarril. Leídas en clave histórica, estas miradas sobre los paisajes de la colonización anticipan lo que en el siglo XX se convertiría en el sur de Chile.es-ES
