The principal aim of this article is to address Ricardo Palma’s lexicographic legacy left in his Papeletas lexicográficas (1903), and to draw attention within the latter’s macrostructure to words that can be classified as toponyms, demonyms, ethnonyms, and akin to these, with the purpose of exploring through such an entry selection the ideas, and portrayal of space, its inhabitants, and the cultural expressions by the latter according to Palma. Therefore, on the basis of some very panoramic considerations, more broadly, on the Hispanic American nineteenth century lexicography’s production context and, more specifically, on Ricardo Palma’s lexicographic oeuvre, a survey will be carried out with the aim of determining which geopolitical, population-based, and ethnic realities he deemed relevant for his dictionary’s macrostructure, and, at the same time, providing a series of analytical guidelines which have been gathered in order to understand the semantic-conceptual, metalinguistic, intertextual, and ideological perspectives that might be recognised amidst the dictionary’s entries. The research’s results reveal, on the one hand, the author’s consciousness on a number of territories and national communities (both contemporary to him and referring to the colonial rule), as well as regional communities, both Hispanic American and also belonging to further geographies. On the other hand, attention will be drawn to different aspects we can highlight in Papeletas lexicográficas, such as some eventual suggestions —albeit basic and approximative— on an initial pluricentric consciousness regarding the Spanish language, and the emphasis on the importance of historical processes and documentation in order to understand the strengthening and/or legitimation of some lexical preferences.El presente artículo tiene como principal interés el legado lexicográfico dejado por Ricardo Palma en sus Papeletas lexicográficas (1903), y presta atención dentro de su macroestructura a aquellas voces identificables como topónimos, gentilicios, etnónimos y otras afines, con el afán de explorar a través de tal selección las ideas y el tratamiento del espacio, sus habitantes y las manifestaciones culturales de estos últimos por parte del autor en cuestión. Sobre la base, por tanto, de algunas consideraciones muy panorámicas acerca del contexto de gestación de la lexicografía decimonónica hispanoamericana en general y de la labor diccionarística de Palma en particular, se desplegará un revisión capaz de determinar qué realidades geopolíticas, poblacionales y étnicas estima Palma como relevantes para la macroestructura de su obra y, a la vez, una serie de pautas e ideológicas reconocibles en los artículos extraídos del diccionario. A modo de resultados, se mostrará la conciencia del autor con respecto a distintos territorios y comunidades nacionales (contemporáneas a él y propias del pasado colonial), regionales hispanoamericanos y propios de otras latitudes y se presentará a continuación que, entre otros aspectos, podemos hallar en las Papeletas lexicográficas posibles indicios, elementales y aproximativos, de una naciente conciencia pluricéntrica del castellano, así como la importancia conferida por Palma a la los procesos y la documentación históricos de cara a la compresión del afianzamiento y/o legitimación de ciertas preferencias léxicas.
