dc.descriptionThis article gives insight into the construction tools in Mesoamerica following the arrival of Europeans in the sixteenth century. The introduction of European tools transformed the way workers carried out their tasks and spurred the development of new architectural production techniques. However, this process was not immediate: the new tools coexisted with their Mesoamerican counterparts in a gradual process of adaptation.This phenomenon might be better understood through an analysis of the Matrícula de Huexotzinco. This sixteenth-century pictographic census records people’s occupations through glyphs, many of which represent the tools used in their trades. Thus, this document provides evidence of the variety of instruments used for construction in Huejotzingo.To achieve the expected results, the study first seeks to demonstrate the usefulness of this source in understanding technological evolution in construction. This is followed by an analysis of the types of tools represented, identifying the continuity of certain instruments from the Mesoamerican world and the introduction of others of European origin. Finally, the study considers the possibility that the persistence of certain tools influenced the architectural production techniques of the era.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo busca contribuir al conocimiento sobre las herramientas de construcción en Mesoamérica tras la llegada de los europeos en el siglo XVI. La introducción de herramientas europeas transformó la manera en que los trabajadores llevaban a cabo sus tareas e impulsó el desarrollo de nuevas técnicas de producción arquitectónica. Sin embargo, este proceso no fue inmediato: las nuevas herramientas pudieron coexistir con sus contrapartes mesoamericanas en un proceso gradual de adaptación.Para profundizar en el entendimiento de este fenómeno, se analizará la Matrícula de Huexotzinco. Se trata de un censo pictográfico del siglo XVI, que registra los oficios de las personas mediante glifos, muchos de los cuales representan las herramientas con que ejercían esos oficios. Por ello, este documento proporciona evidencia sobre la variedad de instrumentos utilizados en la construcción.Para obtener los resultados esperados, primero se busca demostrar la utilidad de esta fuente para comprender la evolución tecnológica en la construcción. Luego, se analizan los tipos de herramientas representadas, identificando la continuidad de ciertos instrumentos del mundo mesoamericano y la irrupción de otros de origen europeo. Finalmente, se plantea la posibilidad de que la persistencia de ciertas herramientas influyó en las técnicas de producción arquitectónica de la época.es-ES
