dc.descriptionThis article uses a longitudinal qualitative methodology to explore the increased appreciation of independent work in Santiago, Chile, following the 2019 protests and during the COVID-19 pandemic. Findings suggest that workers in precarious conditions actively seek autonomy and control over their time. We argue that self-employment should be understood as a cultural repertoire of action and a resilience strategy in response to salaried jobs that fail to provide good working conditions in terms of working hours and fair treatment. We conclude that, in the short term, the pandemic facilitated access to state subsidies and accelerated digitization, boosting the viability of self- employment. In the long term, self-employment in Chile reflects a cultural response to perceived labor injustices and the pursuit of a better work- life balance.en-US
dc.descriptionEste artículo explora, a través de una metodología cualitativa longitudinal, el aumento en la valoración del trabajo independiente en Santiago de Chile tras las movilizaciones de 2019 y durante la pandemia de COVID-19. Los hallazgos sugieren que trabajadores de sectores precarizados buscan activamente autonomía y control sobre su propio tiempo. Argumentamos que el trabajo por cuenta propia debe entenderse así como un repertorio cultural de acción y una estrategia de resiliencia frente a trabajos asalariados incapaces de ofrecer buenas condiciones laborales en términos de jornada laboral y tratos equitativos. Concluimos que, a corto plazo, la pandemia facilitó el acceso a subsidios estatales y aceleró la digitalización, impulso la viabilidad del autoempleo. A largo plazo, el autoempleo en Chile refleja una respuesta cultural a las injusticias laborales percibidas y la búsqueda de un mejor equilibrio entre vida laboral y personal.es-ES
