The ethnographic material (or raw material) of this work, which addresses the beginnings of naval aviation in Chile (1919-1921), is found mainly in the news and reports that appear at that time in the regional and national press, which allow us to learn about the different operations of hydroplanes and the impact they have on the public. The press has a prominent role in the construction of the popular imagination about these machines and their activities, by disseminating their tests, presentations, raids and, of course, their accidents.Los hidroaviones son “máquinas curiosas”, que atraen desde el comienzo la atención de las personas. Las posibilidades de elevarse en el aire luego de salir del agua los hace especialmente atractivos. También su amarizaje. El material etnográfico (o la materia prima) de este trabajo, que aborda los inicios de la aviación naval en Chile (1918-1921), se encuentra principalmente en las noticias y en los reportajes que aparecen en esa época en la prensa, tanto regional como nacional, que permiten conocer las distintas operaciones de los hidroaviones y el impacto que producen en el público. La prensa tiene un rol destacado en la construcción del imaginario popular sobre estas máquinas y sus actividades, al difundir sus pruebas, presentaciones, raids y también, por supuesto, sus accidentes.
