dc.descriptionThe work of Chilean anthropologist Rolf Foerster is analyzed through the metaphorical figure of a machine powered by three engines: structuralism, historicism, and Jesuitism. His first engine, structuralist in nature and influenced by Lévi-Strauss, enables him to analyze Mapuche realities through a textual logic that integrates heterogeneous records, thus overcoming essentialisms and disciplinary boundaries. The second engine, historicism, allows him to move beyond structural formalism by emphasizing the historical contingency and transformation of meanings, while also surpassing the central analytical role given to the Christian figure of the victim by virtue of his third engine, the Jesuitic one. Within this framework, the theoretical importance of his thesis on “hybrid pacts” (of society and submission) between the State and the Mapuche is highlighted. In his more recent work on leprosy in Rapa Nui, Foerster turns to certain “raw images” as vectors of historical and political reality, in opposition to simplistic narratives of victim and perpetrator. In doing so, he manages to explore a space at the very boundary between what can and cannot be said.en-US
dc.descriptionSe analiza la obra del antropólogo chileno Rolf Foerster bajo la figura metafórica de una máquina sustentada en tres motores: el estructuralismo, el historicismo y el jesuitismo. Su primer motor, estructuralista, influenciado por Lévi-Strauss, permite analizar lo mapuche desde una lógica textual que integra registros heterogéneos, superando esencialismos y delimitaciones disciplinares. El segundo motor, historicista, le permite ir más allá del formalismo estructural al subrayar la contingencia y transformación histórica de los significados, pero también ir más allá de la centralidad analítica que toma la figura cristiana de la víctima en virtud de su tercer motor, el jesuítico. En ese marco se destaca la relevancia teórica de su tesis sobre los “pactos híbridos” (de sociedad y sumisión) entre el Estado y los mapuche. En su trabajo más reciente sobre la lepra en Rapa Nui, vemos como Foerster recurre a ciertas “imágenes crudas” como vectores de lo real histórico y político, opuestos a narrativas simplistas de víctima y victimario, logrando explorar un espacio que confinan lo decible y lo indecible.es-ES
