Although there are numerous constructions with inchoative meaning within the category of verbal periphrases in Spanish, they are a relatively understudied typology compared to others (Van Hulle, 2024). Bearing this aspect in mind, the aim of this work is to characterize one of the most frequently used periphrases with an inchoative meaning: . To this end, examples are taken from the COSER corpus (http://www.corpusrural.es/index.php), from which the characteristics and limitations of this structure in oral discourse are analyzed from a temporal, aspectual, and syntactic point of view. As a starting point, attention is paid to the concept of “inchoativity,” as there is some controversy in its treatment in the literature (Martínez-Atienza, 2021). In addition, a description of is offered in contrast to the rest of the periphrases that are also defined as inchoative and ingressive, such as or , among others. In this way, the differences between them are determined and the reason why it is interesting to study this construction in depth is justified, among others: 1) it has a pronominal variable and a nonpronominal variable (Carrasco Gutiérrez, 2006a and 2006b); 2) itis a structure that sometimes has non-periphrastic uses; and 3) it restricts the type of auxiliary verbs which it can be combined with. The analysis mainly takes into account the categories of tense and aspect, the semantic features they select, and the verbs which they most commonly appear with. In short, it delves into the characteristics of this type of periphrasis, in particular , providing new data that allows for a better understanding of how it works.A pesar de que, dentro de la categoría de perífrasis verbales, las construcciones con valor incoativo en español son muy numerosas, suponen una tipología relativamente poco estudiada con respecto a otras (Van Hulle, 2024). Teniendo esto en cuenta, el objetivo de este trabajo es ofrecer una caracterización de una de las perífrasis más frecuentemente usadas con significado incoativo, a saber: . Para ello, se toman como base los ejemplos extraídos del corpus COSER (http://www.corpusrural.es/index.php), a partir del cual se analizan las características y limitaciones desde el punto de vista temporal, aspectual y sintáctico que presenta esta estructura en el discurso oral. Como punto de partida, se presta atención al concepto de “incoatividad”, pues existe cierta controversia en su tratamiento en la bibliografía (Martínez-Atienza, 2021). Además, se ofrece una descripción de en contraste con el resto de las perífrasis que también se definen como incoativas e ingresivas: es el caso de o , entre otras. De este modo, se determinan las diferencias que existen entre ellas y se justifica el motivo por el que es interesante estudiar esta construcción en profundidad, entre otros: 1) cuenta con una variable pronominal y otra no pronominal (Carrasco Gutiérrez, 2006a y 2006b); 2) se trata de una estructura que, en ocasiones, presenta usos no perifrásticos; y 3) restringe el tipo de verbos auxiliados con los que puede combinarse. Para el análisis, se tienen en cuenta, principalmente, las categorías de tiempo y aspecto, los rasgos semánticos que seleccionan y los verbos con los que aparecen más comúnmente. En definitiva, en el presente análisis se aportan nuevos datos que permiten entender mejor el funcionamiento de esta perífrasis.
