The historical investigation has been characterized by the development of self-conscience processes which link the investigator with its own present and confront him with the need to reconsider the entailing questions for the reconstruction of the past. The history text is never completely ended, nor definetly fixed in its written format. One of the constitutive elements of this process is memory, which has revealed, in the last years, as a problematizing axis for the colective historical experience, its reconstruction and interpretation. On this article we follow Antonio Gil's novel ‘‘The stingy memory’’, in order to illustrate the debate about memory taken place in Chile, radicalizad after appearing in the media the partial results of the National Commission on Prison and Torture.La investigación histórica ha estado caracterizada por el desarrollo de procesos de autoconciencia que ligan al investigador con su propio presente y le plantean la exigencia de reconsiderar las preguntas vinculantes para la reconstrucción del pasado. El texto de la historia no está nunca concluido por completo, ni está nunca fijado definitivamente por escrito. Uno de los elementos constitutivos de este proceso es la memoria, que se ha revelado en el último tiempo como un eje problematizador de la experiencia histórica colectiva y de su reconstrucción y su interpretación. En este artículo se sigue la novela de Antonio Gil, ‘‘La mezquina memoria’’, para ilustrar y argumentar el debate sobre la memoria que se ha dado en Chile, radicalizado tras la difusión de los resultados parciales de la Comisión Nacional sobre la Prisión y Tortura.
