| dc.description | This article examines the principal international human rights standards that exist for the treatment of prisoners. Given the increase in the use of imprisonment in many countries, the administration of prisons poses certain challenges. The author addresses this issue by first examining the purposes of imprisonment, which is the only way to evaluate if the penitentiary system is achieving the goals that have been set for it. The author then analyzes five elements that must be taken into account when complying with international standards regarding the treatment of prisoners: living conditions for prisoners; the contact that prisoners have with their families and other persons; special conditions that apply to incarcerated persons according to specific situations (gender, nationality, age, illness, etc.); prison personnel and independent oversight of prisons. In the end, what all of these standards have in common is the importance of upholding human dignity when dealing with incarcerated persons. | en-US |
| dc.description | Este artículo revisa los principales estándares internacionales de derechos humanos que existen para el tratamiento de prisionero/as. El número creciente de personas privadas de libertad genera desafíos para la administración de las prisiones.Frente a ello, el autor se detiene primero en los propósitos que se le asignan hoy en día al sistema carcelario, única forma de evaluar si dicho sistema está efectivamente cumpliendo con los objetivos que se ha fijado. Luego, se analizan cinco aspectos que deben tenerse en cuenta para responder a los estándares internacionales en materia de tratamiento de prisionero/as: las condiciones físicas de detención; los contactos de los prisioneros con sus familiares y otras personas; el tratamiento especial que deben recibir las personas privadas de libertad en función de su situación específica (género, nacionalidad, edad, enfermedad, etc.); el personal de las prisiones y la supervisión independiente de las mismas. A final de cuentas, lo que comparten todos estos estándares es la importancia de tener en cuenta la idea de dignidad de la persona humana en el trato a todas las personas privadas de libertad. | es-ES |
