| dc.description | Occupational Therapy in Latin America began to develop about 50 years ago based on the theoretical and philosophical foundations developed in Europe and United State. Over time, the countries of the region began to accrue own knowledge. This has been consistently, to amend the appropriate interventions to local needs, together with the incorporation new technology end global knowledge. The purpose of this research was to understand the regional historical foundations of the profession in Latin America distinguishing similarities and differences between individual countries. We believe that by knowing the roots and development of a profession, to Latin-American level, we can contribute to improve our professional identity, understand your current situation and project into the future. The methodology utilized was of qualitative–quantitative type and corresponds to a descriptive approach. The data was obtained through an electronic survey directed to occupational therapists from 11 countries in Latin America. Results highlight the issues centering on a lack understanding of the history of a profession, recognition of the important development of OT in Latin America, and the low public awareness of the profession. | en-US |
| dc.description | La Terapia Ocupacional comenzó a desarrollarse en Latinoamérica hace aproximadamente 50 años tomando como base los fundamentos teóricos y filosóficos desarrollados en Inglaterra y Estados Unidos. Con el transcurso del tiempo, en los países de la región comenzaron a acrecentarse conocimientos propios. Este hecho ha llevado, en forma sostenida, a modificar las intervenciones adecuándose a las necesidades locales, junto con la incorporación de nuevas teorías y conocimientos a nivel mundial. El propósito de este estudio, fue entender las bases históricas de la profesión en la región, distinguiendo similitudes y diferencias entre los países, ya que creemos que el conocimiento de nuestras raíces y desarrollo de la profesión puede contribuir, a nivel latinoamericano, a mejorar nuestra identidad profesional, entender la situación actual y permitir proyectarnos hacia el futuro. La metodología corresponde a un estudio de tipo cuali-cuantitativo con enfoque descriptivo. Los datos fueron obtenidos a través de una encuesta electrónica dirigida a Terapeutas Ocupacionales de 11 de 20 países latinoamericanos, lo que corresponde al 55 % del total de países. Los resultados muestran falta de conocimiento de la historia de la profesión, reconocimiento del importante desarrollo de la Terapia Ocupacional en Latinoamérica y el lento conocimiento público de la profesión. | es-ES |
