| dc.description | The work of engineer Eladio Dieste has yet to be contextualized. The inventor of reinforced ceramic in Uruguay, he transformed this material into an efficient, economic and elegant alternative to reinforced concrete. Dieste changed the conception of brick as a filler material that can only be used under compression by using it to produce visually surprising shapes and in elements under flexure.Parallelisms between Dieste’s work and Catalan vaults are mistaken, as the only coincidence is the use of brick. Dieste took it upon himself to deny this similarity when asked about the matter: “The origin of reinforced ceramic did not come from it [the Catalan vault]. Instead, the source can be found in reinforced concrete structures, in fast stripping techniques; that is the basis of the structures. The coincidence between aspects of the final result and some Catalan shells does not mean that reinforced ceramic was inspired by the timbrel vault. It has nothing to do with it.”The aim of this paper is to define the relationships between Dieste’s reinforced ceramic and the reinforced concrete shells that inspired his work and identify the contributions that transformed reinforced ceramic into a new building material capable of producing a new way of making architecture. | en-US |
| dc.description | La contextualización de la obra de Eladio Dieste está aún por realizarse. Inventor de la cerámica armada en Uruguay, la convirtió en una alternativa eficaz, económica y elegante al hormigón armado. Rompió con la concepción del ladrillo como un material de relleno con el que sólo se puede trabajar a compresión, realizando con él formas visualmente sorprendentes, y haciéndolo trabajar en elementos a flexión. Los paralelismos que se hacen de su obra con la bóveda catalana son desacertados, pues la única coincidencia con aquella es la utilización del ladrillo como material. El propio Dieste se encargaba de rehusar esta semejanza cuando se le preguntaba sobre ello, contestando: “la génesis no ha venido por ahí [de las bóvedas catalanas] sino que la génesis ha venido por las estructuras de hormigón armado, de desencofrado rápido; eso ha sido la madre de las estructuras. Que el resultado final pueda coincidir con algunas cáscaras catalanas no quiere decir que esté inspirado, lo que hacemos, en la bóveda a la catalana, no tiene nada que ver.”Este trabajo trata de establecer las relaciones entre la cerámica armada de Dieste y las cáscaras de hormigón armado que inspiraron su obra, identificando las aportaciones que hicieron de la cerámica armada un nuevo material capaz de producir una nueva manera de hacer arquitectura. | es-ES |
