| dc.description | This article proposes that although most architects agree about the urgent need to integrate environmental sustainability criteria in the architectural project, we still find that the kind of architecture that captures media attention is dominated by image, while examples of sustainable architecture are considered aesthetically poor. However, sustainable architecture does not necessarily imply superimposing an aesthetic appearance to a physical performance that obeys the objectives of sustainability, but rather to create an integral relationship between aesthetical values and scientific knowledge. In the search to integrate ethics and aesthetics along the multiple and diverse paths that lead towards sustainability, we should be sceptical of those trends based on a hypothetical consensus regarding what sustainable architecture should be and of the belief that a work of architecture can be objectively evaluated by breaking it up into a list of parameters. | dc.description | Este artículo plantea que si bien la mayoría de los arquitectos coincide en la urgente necesidad de integrar criterios de sustentabilidad ambiental en el proyecto, aún nos encontramos con que el tipo de arquitectura que logra tribuna en los medios está dominada por la imagen, mientras que los ejemplos de arquitectura sustentable son criticados por considerarse estéticamente pobres. Sin embargo, la arquitectura sustentable no implica necesariamente agregar una apariencia estética a un comportamiento físico que persigue objetivos de sustentabilidad, sino que crear una relación integral entre valores estéticos y fundamentos científicos. En un escenario de búsqueda de integración entre ética y estética a través de múltiples y diversos caminos hacia la sustentabilidad, no debemos dejar de mirar con suspicacia aquellas tendencias que se basan en un supuesto consenso universal acerca de lo que la arquitectura sustentable debe ser y en la creencia de que ésta puede ser evaluada objetivamente en base a la desintegración de la obra en un listado de parámetros.
