War, migration and identity: significant testimonies of Nicaraguan women in Costa Rica

| dc.description | Is the reflection and recognition regarding the mediatic discourse about the armed conflict in Nicaragua (1979-1990), relevant to the quotidianity of the Nicaraguan migrant person in Costa Rica? What relation exists between the xenophobic stereotypes that a written press media reproduced in the context of the war and the discriminatory prejudices from which are actually victims the Nicaraguan migrants in Costa Rica? In order to answer these inquiries, the present article seeks to share the products and results, but, before all else, to show a sample of the testimonies manifested by adult Nicaraguan migrants during the development of an action-research within the “Convivio sobre memorias del conflicto armado en Nicaragua y las experiencias de la migración de nicaragüenses en Costa Rica”. The activities were carried out in the Quebradas, Río Azul community, in conjoint with the association Enlaces Nicaragüenses (E.N.). The participants had, via their life testimonies, the opportunity to display how the mediatic discourse about this military period -“guerrilla partisan”, “violent”, “sandinist”, “communist”- it’s an antecedent and part of the xenophobic prejudices that this population faces today. Even more pertinent it’s the conclusion that the validity of xenophobic discourses of such kind are an obstacle for the recognition of the economical contribution, interculturalism and integration of “binational families” -families composed by Costa Ricans and Nicaraguans- in Costa Rica. | en-US |
| dc.description | ¿Es relevante para la cotidianeidad de la persona migrante nicaragüense en Costa Rica, el reconocimiento y la reflexión acerca del discurso mediático sobre el conflicto armado en Nicaragua (1979-1990)? ¿Qué relación existe entre los estereotipos xenofóbicos que un medio de prensa escrita reprodujo en el contexto de esta guerra y los perjuicios discriminatorios de los que actualmente son víctimas los migrantes nicaragüenses en Costa Rica? Para responder dichas interrogantes, el presente artículo busca compartir los resultados y productos, pero, ante todo, una muestra de testimonios manifestados por adultas migrantes nicaragüenses, durante la realización de un proyecto de investigación-acción en el marco del “Convivio sobre memorias del conflicto armado en Nicaragua y las experiencias de la migración de nicaragüenses en Costa Rica”. Las actividades se realizaron en la comunidad de Quebradas, Río Azul, en conjunto con la asociación Enlaces Nicaragüenses (E.N.). Las participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de dar a conocer, a través de sus testimonios de vida, cómo el discurso mediático sobre este período bélico -“guerrillero”, “violento”, “sandinista”, “comunista”-, es parte y antecedente de los perjuicios xenofóbicos que, hoy en día, esta población enfrenta. Todavía más pertinente, la conclusión de que la vigencia de discursos xenofóbicos de tales índoles, son un obstáculo para el reconocimiento del aporte económico, la interculturalidad y la integración de “familias binacionales” -compuestas por costarricenses y nicaragüenses- en Costa Rica. | es-ES |
