In the article we examine the experiences of inter-municipal work and cooperation within the framework of the regional planning and territorial planning system of the Metropolitan Region of Santiago, during the period 2008-2014. From the outset we set out the context of related experiences in Europe, and then we explain the general situation of planning and territorial management in Chile. In the results we present the following instruments: the Environmentally Sustainable Spatial Planning project, the Regional Development Strategy, the Regional Public Policies and the Regional Plan of Spatial Planning. Subsequently, we verify the hypothesis proposed proving that this system has been an instance of territorial governance between regional and municipal actors. This process has allowed the co-construction of the instruments of regional and spatial planning led by the Metropolitan Regional Government of Santiago. Finally, we reflect on the strengths and challenges to overcome in terms of territorial governance and inter-municipal cooperation.En el artículo examinamos las experiencias de trabajo y cooperación intermunicipal en el marco del sistema regional de planificación y de ordenamiento territorial de la Región Metropolitana de Santiago, durante el periodo 2008-2014. Al principio exponemos el contexto de experiencias relacionadas en Europa, luego explicamos la situación general de la planificación y gestión territorial en Chile. En los resultados presentamos los casos de los siguientes instrumentos: el proyecto Ordenamiento Territorial Ambientalmente Sustentable, la Estrategia Regional de Desarrollo, las Políticas Públicas Regionales y el Plan Regional de Ordenamiento Territorial. Posteriormente, verificamos la hipótesis propuesta comprobando que este sistema ha sido una instancia de gobernanza territorial entre los actores regionales y municipales. Este proceso permitió la co-construcción de los instrumentos de planificación regional y ordenamiento territorial liderado por el Gobierno Regional Metropolitano de Santiago. Finalmente, reflexionamos acerca de los puntos fuertes y los desafíos a superar en materia de gobernanza territorial y cooperación intermunicipal.
