This article aims to expose women's use of violence as a tool in their domestic sphere and beyond.Some of the women that live in dangerous neighborhoods and do not have other choice thantransit through those streets, find in violence an useful tool for self-defense, protection andrespect. Based on the preliminary results from an ethnographic research developed in twomarginalized neighborhoods of Buenos Aires, the current text is looking to identify betweendifferent situations and relationships in which women resort to violence. It also seeks to explainthe circumstances that lead them to practice it without questioning their femininity. Theidentified practices are self-defense, defense of the family, neighborhood conflicts resolutions,‘getting even', gaining reputation and the education of their children. Through this practice,women build up an alternative femininity, different from the hegemonic one.    Este artículo se propone resaltar el uso de violencia como un recurso al que también acudenlas mujeres en la esfera doméstica y fuera de esta. Algunas mujeres que viven en barrios peligrososy transitan en sus calles encuentran en la práctica de la violencia una herramienta útilde defensa, protección y respeto. Utilizando los resultados preliminares de una investigaciónetnográfica llevada a cabo en dos barrios populares del Gran Buenos Aires, el presente buscadistinguir distintos escenarios y relaciones interpersonales en los que mujeres adultas recurrena la violencia, así como explicar las circunstancias que llevan a que ellas la practiquen. Entreestas se puede distinguir la defensa propia y de la familia, la resolución de conflictos barriales,desquitarse, obtener reputación y educar a los hijos. Mediante su práctica, las mujeres construyenuna feminidad alternativa, distinta a la hegemónica.
