This paper discusses the traditional definition that has been made of the cabildos abiertos as instances of popular participation between the XVIth and early years of the nineteenth century, and also the characterization that has been attributed to the assembly held in Santiago on September 18 of 1810 in which the Junta Gubernativa was formed in the kingdom of Chile.Este artículo discute la definición tradicional que se ha hecho de los cabildos abiertos como instancias de participación popular entre los siglos XVI y primeros años del siglo XIX, y también la caracterización de tal que se ha atribuido a la asamblea realizada en Santiago el 18 de septiembre de 1810, en la que se conformó la Junta Gubernativa del reino de Chile.
