El origen de las primeras oficinas salitreras que adquirió John Thomas North y sus socios, Robert Harvey y John Dawson, ha permanecido casi desconocido. Sin embargo, a partir de ellas se ha construido el mito del “rey del salitre”. Aprovechando el exhaustivo proceso de expropiación de las salitreras realizado por el Estado peruano, entre 1875 y 1879, a través de los Bancos Asociados, la utilización de Comisiones de Abogados y de Ingenieros, nos ha permitido conocer sobre la propiedad original de esas salitreras o, mejor dicho, de los primeros estacamentos, de J. T. North. Nos hemos preguntado sobre sus primeros dueños, el impacto del proceso de expropiación peruano, y si efectivamente hubo especulación e información privilegiada, que beneficiara exclusivamente a North y sus socios, en perjuicio de lo demás salitreros emergentes, a partir de 1880, bajo el Estado chileno.The origin of the first saltpeter works that John Thomas North and his associates, Robert Harvey and John Dawson, acquired is still almost unknown. However, the “nitrate king” myth has been built based on them. Taking advantage, the thorough expropriation process of the saltpeter works done by the Peruvian State, between 1875 and 1879, through the Associate Banks, making use of the Attorneys and Engineers Commissions, have let us know about the original property of those saltpeter works or rather, of J. T. North’s first stakes. We have wondered about its first owners, the impact of the Peruvian expropriation process, and if in effect there was speculation and privilege information, that would exclusively benefit North and his associates, damaging to the rest of the emerging nitrate entrepreneurs, since 1880, under the Chilean State.
