What is modernity? What burden of value and meaning does one of the concepts that has determined the course of thought –and in its name of action– in recent centuries give us, in making history? Etymologically it speaks to us of novelty, and this will be precisely the predominant idea in the history of thought. In this development, the inheritance of Judeo-Christian thought will give history an end, as a goal and as a meaning, leading us to understand it as a unit, like History. Understanding Modernity as a narrative confronts us, almost without any luck of continuity, with its crisis, at the end of the meta-narrative. This is presented as the essential characteristic of the modern condition. However, as it is conceived as one more narrative, postmodernism questions the origin of the legitimacy of knowledge and the very validity of a way of understanding the world, which will be relativized.¿Qué es la modernidad? ¿Qué carga de valor y de sentido nos confiere hoy, al hacer historia, uno de los conceptos que ha determinado el curso del pensamiento –y en su nombre de la acción– los últimos siglos? Etimológicamente nos habla de novedad, y será precisamente esta la idea predominante en la historia del pensamiento. En este devenir, la herencia del pensamiento judeo-cristiano otorgará a la historia un fin, como meta y como sentido, abocándonos a su comprensión como unidad, como la Historia. Entender la Modernidad como un relato nos enfrenta, casi sin suerte de continuidad, a su crisis, al fin del metarrelato. Este se presenta como la característica esencial de la condición moderna. Sin embargo, al ser concebido como un relato más, desde el posmodernismo se cuestiona el origen de la legitimidad del saber y la validez misma de una forma de entender el mundo, que será relativizada.
