The approval of a negotiation mandate with Chile by the Council of Ministers of the European Union, in July 1999, opened a new framework for the evolution of relations between Chile and Germany and structured the relationship from the Chilean perspective after the achievement of this central objective. However, the bilateral relationship has potentialities that are not exhausted with the fulfillment of this objective. This paper highlights new spheres of action, such as technological cooperation, the environment and science, in addition to the development of traditional areas such as trade, the promotion of investment, culture and the preservation of the notable political relationship expressed very clearly, especially in the last decade.La aprobación de un mandato de negociación con Chile por el Consejo de Ministros de la Unión Europea, en julio de 1999, abrió un nuevo marco para la evolución de las relaciones entre Chile y Alemania y estructuró la relación desde la perspectiva chilena tras el logro de este objetivo central. Sin embargo, la relación bilateral posee potencialidades que no se agotan con el cumplimiento de este objetivo. En el presente trabajo se destacan nuevas esferas de acción, tales como la cooperación tecnológica, el medio ambiente y la ciencia, además del desarrollo de áreas tradicionales como el comercio, el fomento de las inversiones, la cultura y la preservación de la notable relación política expresada con mucha claridad, especialmente en la última década.
