The issue of the State has gained special interest in Latin America in recent times. This is largely due to a recent trend in the social sciences to reassign a special priority to the State in the theoretical paradigms of interpretation of reality. The present work aims to analyze the role of the State in the context of three key elements of the Latin American dilemma: recovery of growth, construction of democracy and promotion of social justice. In the first part, some reflections on the formation of the State in Latin America are introduced. In the second, an attempt is made at a political-institutional approach to recent Latin American evolution. The third and last part of the essay represents a logical consequence, markedly prospective and purposeful, of the two previous sections.El tema del Estado ha cobrado interés especial en América Latina en los últimos tiempos. Ello se debe, en buena medida, a una tendencia reciente de las ciencias sociales, de volver a asignar una prioridad especial al Estado en los paradigmas teóricos de interpretación de la realidad. El presente trabajo tiene por objetivo analizar el rol del Estado en el contexto de tres elementos claves de la disyuntiva latinoamericana: recuperación del crecimiento, construcción de la democracia y promoción de la justicia social. En la primera parte, se introducen algunas reflexiones sobre la formación del Estado en América Latina. En la segunda, se hace un intento de acercamiento político-institucional a la evolución latinoamericana reciente. La tercera y última parte del ensayo representa una consecuencia lógica, marcadamente prospectiva y propositiva, de las dos secciones anteriores.
