La importancia de los mercados ha estado tradicionalmente ligada a su papel como abastecedor urbano de alimentos frescos. Sin embargo, a partir de la segunda mitad del siglo XX muchos de estos espacios han perdido este valor simbólico y han entrado en un proceso de obsolescencia multidimensional. Se propone aquí analizar, como ejemplo de este proceso de declive, el caso del Mercado Central de Concepción (Chile), utilizando como enfoque metodológico el de hábitat sustentable. Desde esta perspectiva, se examina el funcionamiento del mercado como ámbito edificado y como espacio socioeconómico, tanto a escala arquitectónica, como de su entorno urbano. La metodología aplicada consideró el análisis planimétrico, la observación en terreno y las entrevistas, para identificar los factores que han incidido en la insostenibilidad de este mercado histórico. Los resultados sugieren que diversos factores sociales y económicos vinculados al edificio en sí, tanto como a su contexto urbano, permitieron o incluso contribuyeron a la pérdida de cualidades claves para la sostenibilidad del hábitat del mercado.The history of the markets halls has always been linked to its role as a provider of fresh urban food. However, during the second part of the twentieth century, these commercial spaces have ceased to possess this symbolic value globally, entering a process of multidimensional obsolescence. It is proposed to analyze the historical process of the Central Market of Concepción (Chile) through the concept of sustainable habitat, in order to analyze the operation of the market as a built environment and as a socio-economic space both at the building and urban level, with the objective of visualizing the causes of the loss of the sustainable habitat of this historical market. The results show that the neoliberal policies of the 1980s broke the symbiotic relationship that the built, intangible and living heritage of the market maintained with its environment. And that the recovery of this building requires integrated planning of the architectural heritage, the urban environment and that has the tenants who gave life to the market for 70 years.
